Birta Ásmundsdóttir

Birta Ásmundsdóttir is an Icelandic dancer and choreographer. Her main interests are using femininity as a tool to connect with the audience, through choreography and vulnerability. Birta graduated with a BA degree in dance and choreography from the Icelandic University of Arts in spring 2022. Her graduation dance solo “birta” , that she choreographed and danced in, was shown in Reykjavík Dance Festival in november that same year. Since then Birta has worked as a choreographer and assistant director in various works shown in Tjarnarbíó, the City Theatre and the National Theatre. For example the works “Óbærilegur léttleiki knattspyrnurnar” directed by Viktoría Blöndal, “Lónið” directed by Magnús Thorlacius and “Sund” directed by Birnir Jón Sigurðarson. Furthermore she has worked as a dancer in Söngvakeppni RÚV (semi finals for Eurovision), on stage with the band Hatari, in graduation works for the Iceland University of the Arts as well as some advertisements and music videos.

Lately, Birta has primarily been working in residencies and projects abroad, in collaboration and by herself. For her newest work “when a duck turns 18 a boy will eat her” she had the privilege of doing the research in Kjarvalsstofa in Paris as well as develop the idea further in a residency in Lithuania, a dramaturgy workshop in Cyprus and finalising the piece in Dansverkstæðið in Reykjavík. Birta was also a part of the international collaborative project “Unfinished Tales” that was worked on in Copenhagen and shown in the Nordic countries. There she worked as a dancer and a choreographer amongst many other international artists. Recently Birta travelled to Dusseldorf to attend Tanzmesse, with the Performing Arts Center Iceland, as a representative for the Icelandic dance scene accompanied by other Icelandic choreographers. There she expanded her international network as well as getting to know the Performing Arts Center Iceland and the Icelandic choreographers.

As you can tell, Birta feels it is necessary and rewarding to broaden her horizon. She worked as a choreographer in the musical “Hlið við Hlið” shown in Afturámóti Theatre, summer of 2024. There she found interest in musical theatre dance and next she will choreograph and direct movements for “The Rocky Horror Show”, produced by Frúardagur in Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík in the fall of 2024. Birta will premier her newest work “When a duck turns 18 a boy will eat her” at Reykjavík Dance Festival in November 2024. Despite the short career of two years so far, Birta has worked on various projects with many experienced artists, that she keeps on learning from, as well as with her fellow emerging artists, that she keeps on exalting and sharing ideas with.
